Random Weekend Picture 4

Bottles of cola-flavored gelatin dessert are being sold in a Pokka vending machine near the end of the street I live on. I'm not sure if you're supposed to eat it with a spoon as the picture on the label indicates, or if you're supposed to drink it as the bottle shape seems to imply. Either way, I'll keep my 120 yen ($1.33).

Note that "up" is often used in Japanese English as a way of saying "increase". I have to constantly correct students who think it's correct to say "level up" or "skill up" when talking about improving their abilities.

  1. Interesting that your students say "level up" and things like that. That particular use comes from video games, but I wonder if the video game use led to the pervasive use of "UP" in Japanese language or vice-versa.

  2. It's an interesting question, perhaps one of those "chicken and the egg" things. They also say, "skill up", "power up", etc. Those are all game terms though!

    Thanks for your comment! :-)

  3. I love Geelee type of foods... (jelly) gelatin? haha but I only like coffee....

Have you tried any of these yet? I've heard power up... but ......

One thing I caught myself saying was "heavy user" sounds like I have crack pip hiding somewhere...

  5. I actually grew quite fond of the jelly drinks when I was in Japan last year. The one I loved was'Shake Shake Jelly' ('Shaku Shaku Jellu'??-excuse my bad Japanese). Was a grape flavour and we could only get it around Tokyo. Then discovered Fanta did a gelatin based drink that was quite similar but in different flavours!! Basically you would drink and shake, drink and shake until it dissolved into a really runny jelly (closest I can describe it is that it has the consistency of thick water!)
Actually going to be one of the first things I buy when I get off the plane next trip!! (assuming we fly into Tokyo...if not, it will be the last thing I buy!)
