Random Picture 50

A local shop places various and sundry foods on a rack for sale to passersby. One day, they had this fine display of fish heads for a mere 525 yen ($6.38). It was all I could do to stop myself from thinking (quite ethnocentrically) that someone was trying to sell me their garbage.

Of course, I also thought about the "Fish Heads" song. It would have been utterly awesome if it had been playing at the shop when I walked by, but I'm thinking that the seller didn't have much of a sense of humor about this type of thing.

  1. I sing that song to my self every time I see the fish department of a store...still can't bring myself to buy any!

  2. I always think of Homer Simpson singing it in one of the Simpsons Halloween specials. He seems so happy singing it, too!

  4. That is clearly one of the biggest reasons my fiancée dislikes going to Oriental markets/chinatown's over here in the states. She always fears she'll see or worse yet, smell something like that.

  5. Burp and Slurp: You're much more adventurous with eating then me!

gopreds303: I'm with your girlfriend on this, though fortunately being wrapped in plastic controls the smell of the fish heads!

  6. Deep-fried fish heads are one of life's simpler pleasures.
It's a pity that we Westeners have (by and large) "learned" to not accept a large proportion of the animal as good food.

  7. It's true. We're a spoiled lot. However, we did invent hot dogs in order to consume everything from road kill to rat droppings, so we found a way to consume many parts of the animal that would otherwise go to waste. ;-)
